Personal notes

Cpl. Summerfield was shot while in a line up as POW on van Oldenbarneveldstraat close to the Bridge. The SS man involved took his wallet and took out a photo of his wife and tore it to pieces. Cpl. Summerfield reacted on this by stepping forward when the SS man shot him. He was possibly buried as an unknown soldier in the General Cemetery at Arnhem. Just before this tragic incident the same SS man had executed a Dutch volunteer who was in the same line up. The British soldiers had urged the Dutchman to put on a British uniform before they would be taken prisoner, but he proudly refused and kept his \\'Orange\\' armband on. The German said one word; TERRORIST and shot him. In the village if Gullan, East Lothian, Scotland is a war memorial with the name of Cpl. R.H. Summerfield on it.
