Dakota ( C-47 ) KG-579 was on it's way back from the suply drop and shot at by 4 or 5 German fighters about 17.30 hrs. Still flying but with one engine on fire in the area of the village Zeeland several men parachuted out. P/O G. Birlison, P/O F.C. Clarke, Airdespatchers L/Cpl. Pilson, Dvr. Everett, L/Cpl. Harribin and L/Cpl. Moorcroft. Whilst descending on their parachutes Birlison and Corp were strafed by the German fighters and died of their wounds soon after they had landed. The plane crashed near the runway of airfield Volkel with Flt.Sgt D.H.R. Plear and P/O D.A. Webb still in it.
