At 1335 hours 14 Spitfire Squadrons from No.83 Group took off from various airfields to patrol and sweep the Nijmegen-Arnhem area. No. 416 Squadron engaged 12 plus Focke-Wulf 190 enemy aircraft at 12000 ft. north of Arnhem. Three enemy aircraft were reported destroyed for the loss of one 416 Squadron Spitfire. Spitfire MJ412, piloted by Flight Lieutenant Treleaven, was shot down by a FW-190 of Jagdgeschwader (JG) 26 at about 16.40 hrs.
