On this day No. 19 Squadron flew three sorties from the UK airfield Northolt. This photo reconnaissance Spitfire XI with serial number PL896 went down after a dogfight with German fighters in the Neerbosch area near Nijmegen. The pilot was initially buried in the grounds of the 'Jonkerbosch' Boarding School (in use as a hospital) and was later reinterred in the Jonkerbosch War Cemetery at Nijmegen. | |
