15.35 hours (NL-time). While dropping supplies to the airborne troops west of Arnhem, Stirling LJ939 (G5-'A) of 299 Squadron and piloted by Squadron Leader Gilliard was hit by flak. According to a report by one of the survivors the rear gunner and the two air despatchers(Driver Taylor)were killed by flak. Sqn Ldr Gilliard ordered his crew to bail out and five men exited the aircraft with their parachutes while Gilliard kept the aircraft in the air. Regrettably Squadron Leader Gilliard went down with the aircraft, either being to low to jump or trying to make a belly-landing, and was killed in the crash. The aircraft crashed near the Bilderberg Sportspark.
