This P51 Mustang Mk. III, serial number FX-896 took of from B.60 Grimbergen airfield in Belgium for an \"Arnhem Patrol\" in the afternoon. Aircraft of 19 and 65 Squadrons were involved in an air battle with Me-109's and Fw-190's from Jagdgeschwader (JG) 26 who claimed 3 Mustangs of No.19 and No.65 Squadron. FX-896 was one of them. According to German files this aircraft was shot down by Oberfaehnrich Benz of 6./JG 26 (flying a FW-190) at 18.08 hours. The remains of F/Lt. Metzler were found in the wreckage in the summer of 1946. He was initially buried at Wehl and later reintered at the Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Netherlands.
