During the night of the withdrawal, the Royal Canadian and British Engineers worked together to get the survivors safely on the other site of the river. The first 3 Canadian Stormboats (motor powered boats) were launched into the water at 21.45 hrs. Boat 1 got a direct hit by a stray mortar killing all sappers and the CO. Boat 3 was also hit and sank, killing 2 of the crew of 3. Sapper Thompson was one of them. He probably drowned while wounded. HIs body was recovered from the river Rhine. Only Cpl. Smith who was in command of this boat survived.
