During the night of the withdrawal, the Royal Canadian and British Engineers worked together to get the survivors safely on the other site of the river. The first 3 Canadian Stormboats (motor powered boats) were launched into the water at 21.45 hrs. Boat 1 got a direct hit by a stray mortar killing all 4 of the crew of 4 including the CO Lt. Martin. Sapper Roherty was in boat 1. His body was never recovered. Below a photo of his inscription on the Groebeek Memorial Wall. | |
