MiD

Mentioned in Despatches (MiD) is not a medal per se but comprises an oak leaf emblem which is worn on the appropriate campaign ribbon/medal. As the name implies, its origins are in the days when senior officers reported progress with operations and campaigns by means of dispatches sent to UK. Any soldier who had conducted himself with distinction would have details of his action summarised in the dispatch. As the honours and awards system became formalised, then the award of MiD continued as a means of recording those whose actions were noteworthy but not judged to be sufficiently good to merit a state gallantry or meritorious service award.
