During the night of the withdrawal, the Royal Canadian and British Engineers worked together to get the survivors safely on the other site of the river. The first 3 Canadian Stormboats (motor powered boats) were launched into the water at 21.45 hrs. Boat 1 got a direct hit by a stray mortar killing all sappers and the CO Lt. Martin. Boat 3 was also hit and sank, killing 2 of the crew. Sapper Hope was one of them. He probably drowned while wounded. Only Cpl. Smith survived.
